Welcome to
The Allan Houser Foundation

The 60-year career of Allan Houser (1914-1994) placed him at the cusp of the transformation of Native American Art. He was among the first painters trained under Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School and his 1938 murals at the Department of Interior Headquarters are some of the first major artworks by a Native American artist. Allan Houser was the first Native American sculptor – his 1948 commission of "Comrade in Mourning" for the Haskell School in Lawrence, Kansas, would be the first of nearly 1000 sculptural works and led to his 24 year teaching career where he would influence countless younger generations of artists. The featured exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian Inaugural in 2004 was his joint retrospective "Native Modernism."

Mission of the The Allan Houser Foundation

The primary mission of the Allan Houser Foundation is to promote international recognition for Allan Houser. Our continued goal is the development of working relationships with educational institutions worldwide. We provide resources for scholars for study, exhibition and the continued documentation of the life and works of Allan Houser.

Artwork and objects from the Allan Houser Archives have been loaned under the auspices of the Allan Houser Foundation to numerous institutions including the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. and the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ., among others.

The Foundation works to preserve the existing archives, foundry building, sculpture garden, visitors center, and gallery on the site that Allan Houser selected to create his studio and sculpture garden.

A major goal for the Foundation is the eventual creation of the Allan Houser Museum - envisioned as a facility in the Santa Fe area to house the Foundation's entire collection of Allan Houser's creative work and selected artwork from the collection of Mrs. Anna Marie Houser.
